Recently in my religion class at school, we had a discussion about the beatitudes taught by Christ as recorded in Matthew 5:
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
In these verses the Lord teaches of the blessings that come to those who have these qualities. Many of the blessings seem to be things that come in the next life. In our discussion, my teacher pointed out that there are these blessings that come in the future, but for following Christ there are blessings now.
Following Christ brings peace in this life. I think peace is sought for by so many people. I even think people are looking for this inner peace, but just don’t know always what they’re looking for or where to find it. (Or even that they are looking for something at all.)
In addition, every time we keep a commandment we are blessed. King Benjamin, a great Book of Mormon prophet, taught:
[God] doth require that ye should do as he hath commanded you; for which if ye do, he doth immediately bless you. (Mosiah 2:24)
So as we follow Christ now, we can receive more of his blessings.
